In manufacturing, an EMS can collect electricity, gas, steam, compressed air, water or cooling data and connect consumption with production activity.

The purpose is to understand where, when and why consumption changes, identify avoidable losses and measure whether improvement actions produce a lasting result.

What does an industrial EMS measure?

electricity consumption and demand;

gas, steam, water, compressed air and other utilities;

consumption by site, area, line, machine or process;

production output and energy use per unit;

peak demand, load profiles and abnormal consumption; and

energy performance indicators used to track improvement.

How does an EMS work?

Meters, sensors and other data sources provide consumption readings. The EMS timestamps, organises and visualises the data, then applies calculations or comparisons that help users interpret it. Production and operating context can distinguish a genuine efficiency improvement from a change in output, product mix or operating hours.

When a site sees an unexpected change, the team can investigate the relevant equipment, process, time period or utility. Alerts and dashboards focus attention, but improvement still depends on correcting the operational cause.

EMS and ISO 50001

ISO 50001 provides a framework for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system. Software can support measurement, monitoring and evidence, but it does not replace the organisation’s energy policy, review process, operational controls or improvement responsibilities.

EMS versus SCADA and BMS

SCADA systems supervise industrial processes and collect control data. Building Management Systems manage building services such as HVAC and lighting. An EMS focuses on energy performance and the decisions needed to reduce consumption, cost or emissions. A manufacturing site may use all three and exchange data between them.

Benefits and limitations of an EMS

creates visibility of utility use beyond the monthly bill;

helps identify leaks, idle consumption and abnormal demand;

supports energy intensity and cost analysis by production context;

provides evidence for improvement projects and management review; and

helps teams compare performance across sites, lines or time periods.

An EMS is only as reliable as its meters, data model and production context. Poorly placed meters, missing readings or inconsistent output data can produce false conclusions. Pair dashboards with measurement validation and practical action plans.

When should a manufacturer consider EMS software?

Manufacturers often consider an EMS when utility costs are difficult to allocate, energy-intensive equipment is not visible at process level or improvement teams cannot verify savings. Start with utilities and areas where better information can lead to a specific operational decision.

For a commercial overview of real-time industrial energy monitoring, see Accevo Energy Management System software.

Learn what an Energy Management System (EMS) does, how manufacturers monitor utilities and energy performance, and how EMS relates to ISO 50001, SCADA and production data.

[32

post-38246","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-glossary
["GET
