A generative AI assistant usually responds to a user’s prompt with information or a draft. An agentic AI system can pursue a goal through multiple steps, such as retrieving data, choosing tools and taking permitted actions. The boundary is not a fixed product category: systems vary in autonomy, memory and access. Manufacturing deployments should define permissions, human review, auditability and safe failure behavior.
