Manufacturing, explained

What Is Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM)?

Understand what Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) is, how it relates to ISA-95, MES and ERP, and which production activities it helps coordinate.

制造运营管理(MOM) is the set of processes, information and software used to coordinate manufacturing activities between the enterprise and the shop floor. MOM connects people, machines, materials, quality, maintenance and production data.

MOM describes an operating model as well as a technology category. It defines how a plant collects and uses information so teams can manage production from current evidence.

What does MOM include?

  • Production management: dispatch orders, track progress and record work performed.
  • Quality management: plan inspections, record results and manage nonconformances.
  • Maintenance management: coordinate requests, work orders and asset history.
  • Performance management: monitor output, downtime, OEE, scrap and other measures.
  • Material management: confirm availability, consumption, movement and genealogy.
  • Traceability: connect people, equipment, materials, steps and results to an order, product or batch.

How does MOM relate to ERP, MES and SCADA?

ERP manages business processes such as finance, purchasing, sales and master data. SCADA and control systems collect signals and supervise machines. MES usually focuses on production execution and shop-floor records. MOM is the broader management layer that can bring production, quality, maintenance, performance and material activities into one operating picture.

Vendors use MOM and MES differently. Some treat MES as part of a wider MOM platform, while others use the terms almost interchangeably.

MOM and ISA-95

ISA-95 provides a framework for integrating enterprise and control systems in manufacturing. It describes activities and information flows across business planning, manufacturing operations and control. MOM software commonly supports the manufacturing operations level by connecting business requirements with plant-floor work.

Example: coordinating a production order

When an order is released, a MOM system may provide the correct instructions, check material and skill availability, collect machine and inspection data, record downtime and update status. If a quality result falls outside the accepted range, the system can hold affected product and route the issue for investigation.

Benefits and limitations of MOM

  • creates a more consistent view of production across lines and plants;
  • reduces repeated manual entry and disconnected spreadsheets;
  • improves traceability from materials and operations to finished goods;
  • connects performance, quality and maintenance decisions; and
  • supports standardised processes with controlled local variation.

MOM does not fix unclear processes or inaccurate master data. Implementation requires agreement on definitions, ownership, exception handling and the detail operators should record.

When should a manufacturer consider MOM?

MOM is worth considering when plant data is fragmented, teams rely on paper, traceability takes too long or business systems lack shop-floor detail. Start with a defined operational problem and expand the connected scope as the organisation learns.
