What Is a Human-Machine Interface (HMI)?

A Human-Machine Interface (HMI) is the screen or control surface through which an operator views machine or process status and interacts with controls. It may display values, alarms, trends and commands from a PLC or control system. An HMI supports local operation; it is different from MES, which manages production workflows and records.
