Tobacco Production Terms: SMD, FMD, THP, MO/OND and FMC

A short guide to tobacco line shorthand for cigarettes, filters, heated tobacco and oral nicotine products.

In tobacco manufacturing, these abbreviations may describe equipment areas or product categories. SMD is used here for a conventional cigarette maker-and-packer line, although some sites use SMD for the packing section alone. FMD refers to filter-making equipment. THP refers to heated tobacco products and their production lines. MO/OND is local shorthand for oral nicotine product lines, including snus-type products; confirm the exact expansion in the plant’s own terminology. FMC means factory-made cigarettes and names a product category rather than a specific machine. Where SMD means the packing section only, it may cover both THP and FMC products. Equipment names, line boundaries and KPIs should therefore be defined locally.
